Joseph Pilates had an idea while he was rehabbing soldiers during World War I. As they were recovering from broken bones and limbs, and were being held in traction, why not use the weight of the traction equipment to create resistance against which he had them lifting and lowering their arms or legs. What was discovered was that the soldiers under his care recovered much quicker and with fewer physical disabilities. From this experience and over many years of practice and tweaking, he formed the equipment we know today as Pilates Apparatus. It consists of Reformers, Wunda Chairs, Cadillacs, and more. These three pieces of equipment are commonly found in Pilates studios everywhere.

This most excellent form of exercise science allows for a huge variety of options for the beginning, intermediate or advanced exerciser. Pilates can re-train, re-balance, and/or recuperate just about anyone. Physical therapists use it for therapy; athletic trainers and coaches use it for challenge; dancers use it for balancing the body; and all of you will begin and progress through the many layers and creative challenges of this amazing exercise.
